The Shooting Show — walked-up woodcock and expert varminting

We’re on Scotland’s Black Isle for a woodcock shoot, but we’re not doing things the traditional British way – this is an Italian job, with setters with bleeper collars indicating the presence of this revered bird. This is no grouse moor – there’s awkward cover and bogs underfoot. And it’s the last days of the season, so we face a race against time to get some woodcock shooting action on camera.

Back at home, we’ve drafted in Sporting Rifle magazine’s ballistics expert Tim Pilbeam to test Swarovski’s ballistic turrets for use on a varminting rifle. Using this simple mechanism he gets bang on target all the way out to 350 yards – and shows you how you can, too.
